Sepia effect in Photoshop

In this tutorial you will learn how to add a sepia effect to an image in Photoshop. There are many ways to achieve this effect but I will be using the channel mixer. I have used a free stock image for this tutorial, a full list of site containing free stock images can be found here.


Sepia effect in Photoshop

Step 1

Open an image in Photoshop. I have used an image of a lion and lioness, but you can use any image.




Step 2

Remove the colour from the image by selecting on the menu bar Images > Adjustment > Desaturate. Alternative ways of removing colour can be found on this post.




Step 3

Now open up the channel mixer by selecting Images > Adjustment > Channel Mixer and add the following settings. I have set the output channel to red and the 35% for red, 70 for green and 10 for blue and 8% for the constant. You can feel free to change these settings to your liking.



You should now have a sepia effect in Photoshop and remember to subscribe in a RSS reader.

Analogue TV effect

In this Photoshop tutorial you will learn how to create an analogue TV effect on an image. This effect will give blurry horizontal lines on your image. I have used a free stock image of a living room for this tutorial. A huge list of free stock image can be found here.


Analogue TV effect

Step 1

Open your image in Photoshop and duplicate the background layer by pressing Ctrl + J on the keyboard.




Step 2

Select Filter> Sketch> Halftone and add the following settings. I have set the size to 1, the contrast to 12, and the pattern type to line.




Step 3

Add a motion blur to your image by selecting Filter > Blur > Motion Blur then apply the following settings. You may change the distance depending on the size of your image.




Step 4

To return colour to your image, you need to change the blending option of the layer. Now change the blending option to ‘Soft Light’.



You should now have a Analogue TV effect.

Fire background

In this tutorial you will learn a fire background effect using the cloud filter in Photoshop. This process is quick and only requires three steps.


Fire background

Step 1

Open a new Photoshop document with the size 640 x 480 dimensions.
Select Filter > Render > Clouds and you should get the following:




Step 2

Then select Filter > Render > Difference Clouds and you should get the following. If you are unhappy with your clouds you can select Ctrl + F to repeat the cloud filter.




Step 3

You now need to add the fire colour by selecting Image > Adjustment > Gradient Map. Double click on the drop down menu and the gradient editor should appear and add the following colours.



You should now have a fire background.

Create a barcode

In this tutorial you will learn how to create a simple barcode in Photoshop using only a few filters. A barcode is a commonly mark you see on most product such as books, cds etc.

Create a barcode

Step 1

Open a new Photoshop document with the size 200 x 150 dimensions.
Select Filter > Noise > Add Noise and add the following settings:

  • Amount = 350%
  • Distribution = Uniform




Step 2

Select Filter > Blur > Motion Blur and then add the following setting like below. The motion blur creates the vertical lines of the bar code.
  • Angle = 90
  • Distance = 800



Step 3

Insert a new layer Ctrl + Shift + N.
Select a white foreground colour and then the rectangle tool with the ‘fill pixels options’ selected. And drag a rectangle shape at the bottom of the barcode like below:




Step 4

Now add some text to the white area using black foreground colour.



You should now have a barcode.

Wavy texture effect

In this tutorial you will learn how to create a wavy texture effect. You need to use the gradient tool with the radial and diamond gradient for this tutorial.

Step 1

Open a Photoshop document with the dimensions 640 x 480.
Select two colours you want to use for the foreground and background. I have selected #fc1e1e for the foreground and #0fe5f2 for the background.


Step 2

Select the gradient tool with the radial gradient and the mode at difference. Drag the gradient on the canvas a couple of time and you show get the following patterns below:






Step 3

Change to the diamond gradient and repeat the same step above by dragging the gradient on the canvas a couple of time.




Step 4

Select Filter > Adjustment > Invert then choose Filter > Adjustment > Equalize.




Step 5

Duplicate the layer Ctrl + J and change the blending style to Liner Burn.



You should now have a wavy texture effect.

Daydream effect

In this tutorial you will learn how to apply a daydream effect to a mundane image. You will need to use various photo filters and blur filters for this tutorial. I have used a free stock image which is available from: www.sxc.hu


Daydream effect

Step 1

Open an image in Photoshop.
Reset the palette by pressing the ‘D’ key.




Step 2

Select Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and select a 1 pixel radius and click ok. You should get the following blurry image below:




Step 3

Select Filter > Distort > Diffuse glow and add the following settings:

  • Graininess = 1
  • Glow amount = 7
  • Clear amount = 18

Step 4

Duplicate the layer by pressing Ctrl + J then change the blend mode to screen.



You should now have a daydream effect.

Twirl effect

In this tutorial you will learn how to create simple twirl effect using the distort filter and gradients. This process is quick and only requires three steps.

Twirl effect

Step 1

Open a new Photoshop document with the size 640 x 480 dimension.
Select the gradient tool with the linear gradient and whatever gradient colour you wish. If you can’t find a gradient you like, I have provided a list of free photoshop gradients.




Step 2

Click and drag a gradient on the canvas you can choose whatever direction you wish. You canvas should look something like below:




Step 3

Select Filter > Distort > Twirl and give the angle 250 and click ok. Now select Ctrl + F about 4 -5 times and you should get a pattern like below. If you want more twirls then simply select Ctrl + F a few more times.



You should now have a twirl effect.
